I just read a book called “The Plague” by the existential philosopher and Nobel prize winning author, Albert Camus, published in 1947. I’d never heard of medical anthropology until I started looking at you tube videos analyzing the book. Thank you for substantially increasing my knowledge of anthropology in general. BTW, I highly recommend the book, whether you’re a medical anthropologist or just a human that has lived through the most recent “plague” of the last few years.

I am from a latinamerican country where antropology is just developing ( we have like 8 graduated estudents and just 1 forenese antropologist in all the country). Things are just the same here if not worst, you need to do a lot to get in some institution and to be honest, i am afraid. Is my second career ( the 1 that i choiced, cause i like it) but well the existencial crisis apparently is part of the career

Won't this attitude of relativism lead to a dead end? More to the point, don't your comments towards the end of the video undermine much (*not all*) of what you said at its beginning? What I'm trying to say is that if cultural relativism is as you've described then it might be better replaced by something else. Afterall, if I recognize discourse among cultures, or practical limitations imposed by geography (such as proximity to trading ports), or fauna (predators, prey, pests, etc.), or flora or any number of things, as profound influences on shaping a culture, then instead of relativism we should have curiosity. Curiosity, not because we want to avoid making judgements, but so that we can make more informed and wiser judgements, and not make cruel or unempathetic conclusions about another culture. In this way it's possible that we can enjoy food, music, literature, and expand our understanding of science and philosophy through the religions, jurisprudence, mathematics or pharmacology of other cultures while simultaneously condemning child sacrifice, or clitorectomies, or actual pseudoscience (for instance, rubbing oil into open wounds to heal them).

would i be right in saying that moral relativism does not mean "people can do whatever they want, even if it means killing other people" ?

Just found your channel, thanks for doing what you do! Been thing around this question forever, and the things you said here definitely help me put some thoughts together. At the moment, I would say, to be human is to: observe and interact with our environment dynamically using the collection of physical senses and abilities that make us unique. Then, communicating those observations, actions, and feelings to others in our group through a myriad of mediums like, Body language, vocalization, and technology. Technology ranging from, language, writing, art, religion, etc.

If no culture is better than another, why does everyone want to live in White countries? Why didn't sub-saharan Africa have two story buildings before Europeans turned up? Why didn't Boas settle long-term with the inuits? Why was cannibalism normalized in Pre-European Australia? Why did Native Americans practice human sacrifice on little girls until the late 19th century when pioneers outlawed it? Do you or Boas have any answers? Also, it's worth noting that Boas wasn't European and had a great deal of animosity towards western civilization.

Prof Jared’s primary weakness is that he has not been trained in social science, i.e., he is trying to prove his point, he is not testing any hypotheses. Hence, he ends up with geographic determinism without considering how interconnected Homo sapiens are economically, linguistically, genetically, etc. Like Adam Smith who ignores slavery in the Wealth of Nations, Prof Jared is spinning a story to justify the use of guns, bioweapons, and cannons against native peoples. I would suggest that if you are going to major in anthropology, you should minor in statistics. (You can use statistics everywhere, but anthropology generally leads to a career in HR.) I was the Honors Programs Director in Economics and the Associate Director of Public Policy for 25 years at Stanford. My advice is that you skip the class with Prof Jared and do as much field work as you can, e.g., 4-Corners. Have fun, but don’t follow Diamond into a hole.

No Alivia, not everything is relative. In 1829 the first British governor of India, Lord William Bentwick, introduced the death penalty for anybody participating in Sati - the practice of Indian widows being burned alive on their husbands' funeral pyres. Was that cultural custom 'a-OK'? Alivia? In what is now Latin America, the Aztecs practiced mass human sacrifice; others practiced canibalism. Some cultures are objectively better than others.

One key point that people always seem to miss is that when Hancock is speaking to someone that agrees with him he doesn't let them ever embellish what he has said, even just a little bit. It's free support and influence under the radar it would win him points but he just doesn't. Even his boldest claims are measured, if he thinks people agree with him on something even a fraction more he'll reign it back in. He also owns his mistakes which is a lot more than 'big archaeology does'. They've destroyed the reputations of academics that have turned out to be right on something. Is there any apology though? Nope.
